RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) – Israel is holding 26 Palestinian women without trial or charge, a local nongovernmental organization said on Tuesday.
Three journalists, a lawyer and several students are among the detainees, the Palestinian Prisoner Society said in a statement.
“Some 26 women are held administratively without trial or charge from among 80 women in Israeli custody at Damon prison” near Haifa in northern Israel, it added.
The figure does not include Palestinian women detained by Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
According to the NGO, Israeli authorities have issued more than 5,900 orders for administrative detention against Palestinians since Oct. 7, 2023.
The number of detainees held under Israel’s policy of administrative detention reached 3,424 by last April, it added.
Tensions have been running high across the West Bank since Israel launched a deadly military offensive against the Gaza Strip that killed nearly 36,100 people following a Hamas attack on Oct. 7 last year.
At least 519 Palestinians have since been killed and over 4,900 others injured by Israeli army weapons gunfire in the occupied territory, according to the Health Ministry.
