Israel says Palestinian detainee dies in Megiddo prison

JERUSALEM (AA) – A Palestinian detainee has died at the Megiddo prison in northern Israel, the Israeli prison authorities said on Monday.

In a statement, the Israeli Prison Service said the 33-year-old detainee, from the West Bank, died after feeling unwell.

The statement, however, did not provide any further details

There are more than 7,000 Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails, according to estimates released by prisoners’ affairs groups.

Tension has been running high across the Palestinian territories amid an Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7.

More than 11,100 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 8,000 children and women, in Israeli air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since last month, the government media office in Gaza said on Sunday.

The Israeli death toll is nearly 1,200, according to official figures.
