ISTANBUL (AA) – Israeli warplanes struck sites inside Syria with one-ton bombs and bunker-busting munitions, Israeli media reported on Monday.
According to Israel’s Army Radio, the army is working on destroying "every potential military targets" of the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad, including tanks, warplanes, intelligence headquarters and advanced military equipment.
On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the collapse of a UN-monitored disengagement agreement, which established a buffer zone between Israel and Syria after Syrian regime forces withdrew from the area following the fall of Assad’s regime.
The Israeli army acknowledges that its forces have advanced several kilometers into the demilitarized buffer zone in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, but claims that it has no intention to advance further, the radio said.
In a statement early Monday, the army said that paratroopers' forces, joined by other troops, were deployed in key positions in the buffer zone and were conducting what it called defense activities “to prevent any threat.”
The Israeli army on Sunday carried out dozens of airstrikes across Syria targeting around 100 sites following the fall of the Assad regime.
According to Israeli media, the airstrikes targeted military bases, air defense stations and intelligence headquarters as well as long- and short-range missile depots, weapons production centers and unconventional weapon stockpiles.
Assad fled Syria to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of the capital Damascus early Sunday, marking the collapse of the Baath Party regime, which had been in power in Syria since 1963.
