Israeli army detects launch of 30 rockets from Lebanon into Golan Heights

JERUSALEM (AA) – Thirty rockets were launched from Lebanon towards the town of Majdal Shams in the Israeli occupied Golan Heights which coincided with the sounds of sirens, Israeli army radio reported Sunday.

The radio did not specify whether there were casualties.

No claim of responsibility has been reported.

The Israeli army said in a statement that it had detected fighters with “anti-tank missile launchers” in the area of Shebaa Farms in southern Lebanon on Sunday and two of its aircraft “attacked them before they could launch the missiles.”

“This morning, a drone belonging to Hezbollah was detected, which crashed in an open area near Mount Hermon without causing any injuries or damage," it said.

“Earlier on Sunday, an anti-tank missile was launched from Lebanese territory towards the area of ​​Malkiya without causing any injuries but causing material damage to a military vehicle.”​​​​​​​

Tension has flared along the border between Lebanon and Israel amid intermittent exchanges of weapons fire between Israeli forces and the Lebanese Hezbollah group in the deadliest clashes since the two sides fought a full-scale war in 2006.

The tension comes amid an Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip that has killed nearly 31,000 people, mostly women and children, following an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas attack on Oct. 7 last year.

Israel has waged a deadly military offensive on the Gaza Strip since the Oct. 7 cross-border attack by Hamas, in which some 1,200 people were killed.

More than 72,500 others have also been injured amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities.

The Israeli war has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid a crippling blockade of most food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave's infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice. An interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
