JERUSALEM (AA) – The Israeli army said on Tuesday that it shelled two Hezbollah observation posts in south Lebanon in response to rocket volleys fired on its territory.
A military statement said 15 rockets were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel, triggering air raid sirens in the Western Galilee region.
The army said four rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense systems, and 10 others crashed in unpopulated areas.
There were no injuries or property damage reported.
Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese TV channel Al-Mayadin reported that three rocket volleys were fired into northern Israel.
On Monday, Hezbollah said three of its members were killed in Israeli shelling of border areas in south Lebanon.
The escalation came amid Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip following an attack by Palestinian group Hamas on Israeli towns near the seaside territory.
More than 1,800 people were killed in the violence, including 1,000 Israelis and over 830 Palestinians.
Hezbollah fought several wars with Israel, the latest of which was in 2006 during which the Lebanese group struck major Israeli cities with rockets, causing significant material damage.
Over 1,000 Lebanese were killed in the conflict, while much of southern Lebanon – a Hezbollah stronghold – was devastated by Israeli attacks.
