Israeli defense company targeted in shooting in Sweden

LONDON (AA) – The Swedish subsidiary of Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems was targeted in a shooting in the western city of Gothenburg on Thursday, but there were no casualties, according to a police statement.

One person under age 15 has been detained in connection with the shooting, police confirmed at a news conference.

Authorities have opened a preliminary investigation on attempted murder and aggravated weapons offences. There were no injuries, police said.

The incident came just days after Israel's offensive on Gaza, which has killed over 42,000 people, passed the one-year mark.

Elbit, one of the largest Israel largest defense technology contractors serving the Israeli army, was also targeted in June when a live explosive device was found in the area.

Last December the company was also targeted by pro-Palestinian protesters who painted graffiti saying “Weapons kill kids.”

“There has been a campaign directed at the company. It’s part of a kind of expression of dissatisfaction where you turn against Israel's warfare,” John Granlund, who covers security at national broadcaster SVT Nyheter, was quoted as saying.
