ANKARA (AA) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden on Saturday discussed the latest escalation with Palestinian groups, which has left hundreds killed on both sides.

According to a statement by the Israeli premier's office, Biden called Netanyahu and "emphasized that the US stands alongside Israel and fully supports Israel's right to self-defense."

Netanyahu thanked US President Biden for the "unreserved support" and "made it clear that a forceful, prolonged campaign – which Israel will win – is necessary."

Biden, for his part, said he "offered our support and reiterated my unwavering commitment to Israel’s security," and expressed "condolences to the families who have lost loved ones."

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also "unequivocally" condemned the "appalling attacks."

"We stand in solidarity with the government and people of Israel and extend our condolences for the Israeli lives lost in these attacks," he said on X.

Hamas, the group running Gaza, said its Operation Al-Aqsa Flood was in "response to Israel’s aggression against Al Aqsa" Mosque and settler violence.

The Israeli army then launched Operation Iron Swords against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The developments have been described as "war" by Netanyahu.

Medical sources in Gaza say at least 198 Palestinians have been killed, whereas Israeli Army Radio said more than 100 Israelis had been killed.

Netanyahu also spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and both leaders expressed "full support for Israel's right to defend itself," according to his office.
