Italian government’s populist partner party proposes to ban Islamic veil in public places

It is common sense move against those who oppose our culture, values, says Lega party’s leader

ATHENS (AA) – Italian coalition government’s right-wing populist partner proposed to ban Islamic veil in public places, reported local media on Monday.

Commenting on the law proposal submitted to the Italian parliament by Lega party he leads, Matteo Salvini, also deputy premier said the proposal was "common sense."

“A common sense proposal from the Lega against those who do not respect our culture and the principles of Western freedom,” he said, according to state-run ANSA news agency.

"And zero tolerance for those who oppressively force women and girls to wear the veil, with prison term and a suspension of citizenship application,” he added.

The bill proposes a ban on wearing in public places clothing "suitable for hiding the face, as in the case of the burqa or niqab".

It envisions two-year jail terms and a loss of the right to request citizenship for men who force women to wear the veil.
