Italy detains 52 suspects in major operation targeting 'Ndrangheta crime group

LONDON (AA) - In a significant blow to one of Italy's most notorious organized crime groups, the 'Ndrangheta, Italian law enforcement authorities have detained 52 suspects in a meticulously planned operation codenamed "Karphantos," according to the state-run ANSA news agency on Friday.

The operation, led by the Italian Carabinieri, unfolded in the southern region of Calabria, long considered a stronghold of the 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate. The operation involved over 400 Carabinieri officers, as authorities intensified their battle against organized crime in Italy.

The arrested individuals face a litany of serious charges, including mafia association, criminal association for narcotics trafficking, extortion, robbery, and money laundering.

Among those taken into custody, 38 have been sent to jail, while six have been placed under house arrest.

Additionally, eight individuals are now obliged to regularly check in with the police as part of their legal obligations during the ongoing investigation.

The 'Ndrangheta, hailing from the southern region of Calabria, has risen to infamy as Italy's most formidable organized crime syndicate. Its influence has been notably bolstered by its stranglehold over a significant portion of the cocaine trade, facilitating the illicit flow of narcotics into Europe.

Over time, the 'Ndrangheta has expanded its reach beyond Italy's borders, further cementing its reputation as a global criminal network.
