Italy reiterates opposition to EU ban on non-electric cars from 2035

Ban would threaten 70,000 jobs in Italy, says foreign minister

ATHENS (AA) – Italy reiterated its opposition to the EU ban on non-electric cars and engines from 2035 onwards, local media reported.

Speaking at the Federation of Transportation Companies (CONFTRASPORTO), Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said: “Crazy decisions have imposed a total halt to the production of non-electric vehicles and engines from 2035 and this means losing 70,000 jobs in Italy,” according to state-run ANSA news agency.

Stressing that he is not a denier of climate change, Tajani said: “Fight against climate change cannot be a sort of religion, with dogmas that must be accepted by everyone without discussion and that impose unattainable goals on companies.”

Tajani also argued that environmental protection should not come at the cost of destroying industry, agriculture, and enterprise.
