ANKARA (AA) – China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday that his country's relations with Japan have gotten off to a "good start," following the establishment of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s government.

Wang expressed hopes that Japan will respect China's "core" interests, honor its commitment to the one-China principle, adhere to the positioning of China and Japan as partners and non-threats to each other, and make contributions to regional peace and stability, state-run Xinhua News reported.

The top Chinese diplomat made the remarks during a phone call with Japan's National Security Adviser Takeo Akiba on Monday.

Akiba, for his part, said Tokyo is willing to work together with Beijing to carry out directional and strategic dialogues and send more positive signals to the outside world.

The two parties agreed to continue making "good use of the mechanism of China-Japan high-level political dialogues and maintain frequent communication."
