Tokyo aims to reach deal during G7 summit in Canada in June

ISTANBUL (AA — Japan will continue its tariff talks with the US to reach a deal during the Group of Seven summit in Canada this June, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Sunday, Jiji Press reported.

"We will further advance discussions, with the G-7 summit in mind," Ishiba told reporters following the third round of ministerial tariff talks between Washington and Tokyo on Friday.

Ryosei Akazawa, Japan's top tariff negotiator, met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and "strongly" urged the US to remove additional tariffs on his country.

In a recent phone call, Ishiba and US President Donald Trump agreed to continue working toward an agreement on the matter when they meet at the G-7 summit.

Japan has urged the US to reconsider its tariff policy, which includes a 25% import duty on automobiles.

While a 24% "reciprocal" tariff has been suspended, the US continues to impose a 10% baseline duty, as well as levies on steel and aluminum.
