ANKARA (AA) – Jordan said Sunday that it will support any political process launched by the Syrian people to build a new political system following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

Assad fled Syria to an unknown location after anti-regime groups took control of the capital Damascus early Sunday, marking the collapse of the Baath Party regime, which had been in power in Syria since 1963.

It came over a week after anti-regime groups seized control of Aleppo, a major city in northern Syria.

"We follow the developments in the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic with great interest and concern for Syria’s security, safety, unity, cohesion, sovereignty, and the security of its brotherly people," Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said in a statement.

He said Jordan is ready to provide “all possible support to the Syrian people in their efforts to rebuild their homeland, institutions and political system, in a way that guarantees Syria’s security, sovereignty, freedom and a free and dignified life for all its citizens.”

“We will support any political process launched by the Syrian people to build a political system that meets the aspirations of the brotherly Syrian people, preserves their rights, and puts Syria on the path to build a secure and fulfilled future that its brotherly people deserve,” he added.

The top Jordanian diplomat called for protecting Syria “from sliding into chaos” and preserving its national institutions.

“Jordan is ready to provide any assistance needed by the brotherly Syrian people, and we stand absolutely with their security and stability,” he added.
