AMMAN, Jordan (AA) - Around 2,000 people took part in a protest near the Israeli Embassy in the Jordanian capital Amman for the second day in a row to show solidarity with the Palestinian people.

During the protest, they chanted slogans demanding the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador Amir Weisbord over the events in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The stand took place in the courtyard of the Al-Kalouti Mosque, near the Israeli Embassy in Amman, amid a heavy security presence, Anadolu Agency reported on the ground.

Security forces initially tried to prevent holding a sit-in but re-allowed it to occur after the number of participants increased.

Tensions have run high in the Sheikh Jarrah area since last week as Israeli settlers swarmed in after an Israeli court ordered the eviction of Palestinian families.

Palestinians protesting in solidarity with the residents of Sheikh Jarrah have been targeted by Israeli forces.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and annexed the entire city in 1980 – a move that has never been recognized by the international community.
