Kazakh president, EU foreign policy chief discuss strategic cooperation

ISTANBUL (AA) – Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held talks with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas to explore bilateral ties and regional challenges, the Kazakh presidency said on Friday.

The meeting centered on strengthening cooperation in trade, energy, digitalization, and major infrastructure projects, including the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.

Kallas noted Kazakhstan was among the first countries in the region to sign a partnership and cooperation deal with the EU, describing relations as strong.

She said both sides had launched the ratification process for a visa facilitation agreement.

Tokayev welcomed the step, saying it would deepen personal and business ties between Kazakhstan and EU countries.

The two leaders also discussed regional and global issues. Tokayev stressed the need for a responsible and balanced approach in addressing international developments during a period of growing instability.

He reiterated Kazakhstan’s position favoring diplomacy to resolve international disputes.

They also reviewed the status of the "Central Asia-European Union" cooperation framework.

Kazakhstan and the EU have expanded their strategic dialogue in recent years, with the Trans-Caspian route seen as a key trade link bypassing Russia.
