NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) – A total of 26 people are confirmed dead in Kenya after a bus they were traveling on collided with an oil tanker on Tuesday.
Police said that the bus, which was headed from Mombasa from the capital Nairobi, was trying to overtake a slow truck when it crashed head-on with the tanker, leaving many others injured, including the bus driver and his conductor.
“The driver, the conductor, and 19 other passengers have been taken to Makindu Hospital, some in serious condition,” Kibwezi East OCPD Leonard Kimaiyo told Anadolu Agency in a telephone interview.
Police also confirmed that among the dead are three children and students.
Last December 40 people lost their lives when an oil tanker lost control and smashed into other vehicles before exploding along the Nairobi-Naivasha highway.
Last year Kenya’s highways authority said the number of people killed on roads rose from 2,699 in 2015 to 3,932 in 2016.
