Kenya confirms over 95,000 COVID-19 infections

Confirmed tally of deaths from virus reaches 1,652, while confirmed infections are 95,431 from cumulative tests of over 1M

ANKARA (AA) - Kenyan health authorities on Thursday confirmed four new COVID-19-related deaths and 236 infections in the last 24 hours, as a second wave of the pandemic continues to batter the East African country.

“4 patients have succumbed to the disease bringing the cumulative fatalities to 1,652,” Kenya’s Health Ministry tweeted Thursday in its last update.

The newly confirmed cases – 211 Kenyans and 25 foreigners – were from a sample of 3,773 tested in the last day, bringing the tally of reported infections to 95,431, the ministry noted.

“The cumulative tests are now 1,025,653,” it added.

The ministry also confirmed the recovery of 212 COVID-19 patients on Thursday, bringing the tally of reported recoveries to 76,720.

With a spike in infections in recent weeks, Nigeria has been hit hard by the second wave of the pandemic.

The coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan, China last December before spreading to all seven continents. More than 78.8 million people have been infected, while over 1.73 million have died, according to the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
