Kenya: Market in flames amid post-election violence
Market in southeastern town of Garissa set ablaze
By Magdalene Mukami.
Nairobi (AA) – The southeastern Kenyan town of Garissa was rocked by post-election violence Thursday as supporters from rival political parties clashed in the market area.
The market area was set ablaze after officials from the Kenya electoral body, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced Ali Bunow Korane of the ruling Jubilee Party as the winner of the gubernatorial election, thus defeating Garissa Governor Nathif Jama.
Supporters of the two candidates started a commotion in the market area which eventually resulted in a fire.
”The fire was so huge it affected so many parts of our market," Omar Jalo, a local vendor, told Anadolu Agency.
A police officer, who spoke to Anadolu Agency, also confirmed the incident.
This comes after post-election riots in Kenya killed five people on Wednesday after the opposition leader rejected preliminary results putting incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta in the lead.
