Kenya to introduce visa-free policy starting in January
President William Ruto unveils policy during 60th Independence Day celebrations
By Andrew Wasike
NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) - President William Ruto said Tuesday that Kenya would eliminate visa requirements for international visitors.
“Beginning January 2024, Kenya will be a visa-free country. It shall no longer be necessary for any person from any corner of the globe to carry the burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya,” Ruto said in a televised speech during the 60th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.
He said the decision is rooted in the country's commitment to embracing globalization and fostering socio-economic growth by opening its borders.
A cutting-edge digital platform has been developed to execute the progressive policy, ensuring pre-identification for travelers through an electronic system.
Ruto told content creators that Facebook and Instagram will soon compensate them through Meta platforms after successful negotiations led by the government.
The president vowed that no Kenyan shilling, or the national currency, will be lost through corrupt practices, asserting a strong stance against corruption.
