Kenyan opposition leader rejects early poll results

Preliminary results put President Kenyatta ahead

NAIROBI (AA) – Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga early on Wednesday disputed the preliminary presidential election results released by the country's electoral body, calling them “illegal, fictitious, sham and fake”.

Earlier, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) released results giving incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta an early lead over his main opponent former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

“What is going on right now is a sham and a total disregard of Section 39 of the Elections Act which requires the IEBC to stream all form 34As on the public portal,” the National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate said in an early morning press conference.

“As we stand not a single form 34 has been streamed, a clean credible result would now have a dashboard showing all tallies from all constituencies,” he added.

Raila said that the inaccurate and illegal text results which are currently being beamed live through streaming should be stopped.

“The system has failed [...],” said Odinga.

As of 9.00 a.m. (0600GMT), Kenyatta is leading with 7,461,933 votes compared to Odinga’s 6,079,136 votes.

Kenya’s electoral commission has said that all the required forms are available for confirmation and called on the opposition to give them time so that they can be delivered to their offices for scrutiny.
