Kenyans living in Turkey are safe, says ambassador

Turkish diplomat says state of emergency is 'not martial law'

By Andrew Wasike

NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) – Kenyans living in Turkey following the failed July 15 coup are safe, Ankara’s ambassador said on Sunday.

In comments to local media, Deniz Eke said the current state of emergency called by the government would not affect the normal lives of Kenyans in Turkey.

“The state of emergency is not martial law. There will not be any limitation on fundamental rights and freedoms during the state of emergency. The government guaranteed that the lives of the ordinary citizens shall not be affected,” Kenya’s Star newspaper quoted Eke as saying.

Kenyan leader Uhuru Kenyatta has written a personal message to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, assuring him of his country’s support.

Kenyatta told Erdogan his country was mourning with the people of Turkey for the people who were martyred during the coup attempt.

Over 240 people were martyred following the attempted coup by a section of the Turkish military.
