Kenya's coronavirus tally crosses 65,000

ANKARA (AA) – Over 1,200 new infections have taken Kenya’s COVID-19 tally past 65,000, the country’s Health Ministry said.

The death toll increased by 26 to reach 1,180, according to the latest figures.

“Today, 1,216 people have tested positive for the virus, from a sample size of 6,816 tested in the last 24 hours, bringing to 65,804 the number of confirmed positive cases in the country,” the ministry said.

According to the update, 1,174 of the new patients are Kenyans and 42 are foreigners.

The total number of tests done in Kenya to date is now at 760,775.

“531 [more] patients have recovered from the disease, 382 from the Home-Based Care Program, while 149 have been discharged from various hospitals. Total recoveries now stand at 43,626,” the ministry said.

The number of patients in hospitals is 1,289, while 5,960 more are isolating at home, it added.

“57 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 18 of whom are on ventilatory support and 34 on supplemental oxygen,” the authority said.

“Another 86 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen out of whom 68 are in the general wards, while 18 are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).”

It said the virus has killed 23 health workers and infected 2,148 more in Kenya to date.

Across the world, COVID-19 has claimed over 1.28 million lives in 190 countries since last December.

The number of infections is over 52.12 million, with recoveries exceeding 33.92 million, according to the latest figures from the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
