Kirkuk provincial council in Iraq set to convene for first time in 7 months post-election

Council expected to elect new parliament speaker, city governor

BAGHDAD (AA) - After a seven-month hiatus since the elections, Iraq's Kirkuk provincial council is scheduled to convene on Thursday.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani issued the call for the Kirkuk provincial council's session on Tuesday.

The main agenda includes the election of a new parliament speaker and subsequently, the appointment of the city's governor. However, sources informed Anadolu that political parties have yet to reach a consensus on the governorship.

The Kirkuk Provincial Assembly comprises 16 seats. In the local elections held in Iraq on December 18, 2023, the distribution of seats saw Turkmens securing two, Arabs six, Kurdistan Patriotic Union Party five, Kurdistan Democratic Party two, and Christians one seat.
