Kosovo's defense minister resigns citing family issues

Armend Mehaj says it was honor to work with dedicated colleagues, ensure security of nation

BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Kosovo's Defense Minister Armend Mehaj resigned on Tuesday citing family reasons.

Mehaj said that Prime Minister Albin Kurti relieved him from duty after his request."This request on my part has come for family reasons, of which I notified Prime Minister Kurti a long time ago," said Mehaj in a statement.

“As Minister of Defense, I want to express my gratitude to everyone after an incredible journey. It was an honor to work with our dedicated colleagues to ensure the security of our nation," he said in his farewell message.

In a Facebook post, Kurti said that he has accepted Mehaj's resignation.

"Today, at the request of the Minister of Defense, Armend Mehaj, I accepted his resignation. The dismissal request comes for family reasons. I thanked Minister Mehaj for his tireless work, impressive contribution, regular cooperation, and his exemplary commitment from the first day of taking office," said Kurti.

Kurti appointed Ejup Maqedonci, who is from the Kosovo Security Force, as the new defense minister.
