Kremlin says Russia sees dynamics in rising popularity of right-wing parties in Europe

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Kremlin said on Monday that Russia sees a rise in the popularity of right-wing parties in Europe after last week's four-day European Parliament elections.​​​​​​​

“We see dynamics in the increasing popularity of right-wing parties. This can be seen with the naked eye,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in a press briefing in Moscow, about a question on the preliminary results of the EU parliamentary elections.

Peskov said the majority of the European Parliament’s composition will be pro-European and pro-Ukrainian, expressing that its future composition also remains to be analyzed.

“Despite the fact that the pro-Europeans retain their leading positions, over time, the right-wing parties will step on their heels. Therefore, we are closely watching this process,” Peskov further said.

Preliminary results from the EU parliamentary elections held on June 6-9 continue to come in as citizens of the 27-member bloc voted to elect representatives in the 720-member European Parliament for the next five years.

The official results of the EU parliamentary elections are set to be announced later on Monday, with the first General Assembly scheduled for July 16 to commence the new legislative period.
