Kurdish regional government in Iraq welcomes Gaza cease-fire deal

KRG Presidency expresses hope for lasting peace in region

ERBIL, Iraq (AA) - The Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq on Thursday welcomed the cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Sharing its satisfaction over the agreement on X, the KRG Presidency expressed hope that the cease-fire would mark the beginning of lasting peace in the region.

"The end of violence is the only way to ensure everyone feels secure about a better future. We call on all parties to remain committed to dialogue and work toward stability and development," the statement said.

Qatar announced the cease-fire agreement on Wednesday to bring an end to more than 15 months of Israeli military attacks on Gaza.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stated that the three-phase agreement will come into effect on Sunday.

The deal includes provisions for a prisoner exchange, sustained calm, and efforts to establish a permanent truce with the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Since Oct. 7, 2023, nearly 46,800 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have lost their lives, and over 110,000 have been injured during Israel’s war on Gaza, according to local health officials.

The conflict has also left over 11,000 people missing and caused massive destruction, creating a severe humanitarian crisis that has disproportionately affected children and the elderly.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the enclave.
