ISTANBUL (AA) - Ukrainian officials gave a briefing on the current security situation in the country to a visiting Chinese delegation led by Beijing’s special envoy for regional affairs.
“The (Ukrainian) Presidential Office hosted a briefing chaired by Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak on the security situation in Ukraine and other topical issues for the delegation of the People's Republic of China headed by Li Hui, Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Eurasian Affairs,” a Ukrainian presidency statement said.
Noting that this is Li’s second visit to the country since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war over two years ago, the statement said the Chinese delegation was briefed on multiple issues, including the situation on the front line, the functioning of the grain corridor, and the return of prisoners of war.
“The Chinese delegation was shown samples of the wreckage of a downed North Korean missile and other elements of the weapons that were transferred to Russia and used by it to attack Ukraine,” the statement said.
It also quoted officials claiming that Russia uses components from third countries to produce weapons, including attack and reconnaissance drones, missiles, optical devices, navigation systems and aircraft parts, which they said are being used against Ukrainian civilians.
The Chinese delegation was informed in detail about the situation with nuclear and radiation safety in the context of the war, in particular about the situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the statement went on to say.
“The cases of Russia's gross violation of the Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War were highlighted during the meeting,” the statement said.
It added that Li also held separate talks with Yermak, Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, during which the parties discussed the prospects for establishing a “just peace” and restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty based on the peace formula proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The parties also discussed the possibility of China's assistance in multiple issues, including prisoner exchanges and the “demilitarization and de-occupation” of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the statement said.
“Andriy Yermak spoke about the measures taken to implement the Peace Formula and preparations for the first Global Peace Summit to be held in Switzerland. The Head of the President's Office emphasized the importance of the widest possible support for the Ukrainian Peace Formula by all countries of the world,” it added.
