ISTANBUL (AA) - Kyiv on Thursday welcomed the agreement of EU leaders on providing Ukraine with an additional €50 billion ($54 billion) support package.

“Grateful to (European Council President) Charles Michel and EU leaders for establishing the €50 billion Ukraine Facility for 2024-2027,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement on X.

Expressing it is “very important” that the decision was made by all 27 leaders of the bloc, proving “strong EU unity,” Zelenskyy said that continued financial support for the country will “strengthen long-term economic and financial stability, which is no less important than military assistance and sanctions pressure on Russia.”

In a separate statement on X, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba also thanked the EU for the additional support package, saying the decision shows that talks on “war fatigue” or "waning support" are false.

“Europe has once again demonstrated its strength and ability to make major decisions independent of others. The EU is leading the way and setting an example for the rest of the world to follow,” Kuleba further said.

He also said this is a “clear indication” that Russian President Vladimir Putin's “hopes of outlasting Ukraine's and the world's resolve are futile.”

“I am deeply grateful to all of the EU foreign ministers who contributed to this success,” he added.

Earlier on Thursday, EU leaders agreed on an additional support package for Ukraine within the EU budget amid a special European Council meeting in Brussels.
