Lebanese soldier injured in Israeli airstrike on military post in southern Lebanon

BEIRUT (AA) - A Lebanese soldier was injured Tuesday in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a military post in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Army.

The army confirmed that “the Israeli enemy targeted an army post in Ebel El Saqi, Marjayoun, injuring a soldier with minor wounds.”

Lebanon announced plans earlier to file a complaint with the UN Security Council because of Israel's deliberate and ongoing attacks on its military since the escalation began Oct. 8, 2023. The strikes have intensified in recent weeks.

The Foreign Ministry said it instructed the country's permanent mission to the UN in New York to lodge a formal complaint with the Security Council.

A statement noted that between Nov.17 and 24, Israeli attacks killed 10 soldiers and injured 35, including several critically. It characterized the assaults as “serious violations” targeting army personnel, positions and vehicles.

“This assault on the Lebanese Army is a clear message from Israel rejecting any initiatives for a resolution and insisting on military escalation over diplomacy,” it added

Israeli bombardment intensified across Beirut, southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley and Baalbek in recent hours, leaving dozens dead and injured.​​​​​​​

Israel has escalated airstrikes in Lebanon against what it claims are Hezbollah targets as part of a year-long warfare against the Lebanese group since the start of the Gaza war last year.

More than 3,800 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon, with nearly 15,900 injured and over 1 million displaced since October 2023, according to Lebanese health authorities.​​​​​​​

Israel expanded the conflict by launching a ground assault into southern Lebanon on Oct. 1.
