ISTANBUL (AA) - French President Emmanuel Macron called on Friday for a "complete” withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, emphasizing the need for accelerated efforts to secure Lebanon’s sovereignty.
“The Lebanese Armed Forces must be strengthened as a pillar of sovereignty," Macron said in a joint press conference with his Lebanese counterpart in the capital Beirut.
This is Macron’s first visit to Lebanon since Joseph Aoun was elected Lebanese president after more than two years of political deadlock.
According to the French Presidency, the one-day visit aims to support the Lebanese government in bolstering sovereignty and stability amid ongoing challenges.
“Israel must withdraw from South Lebanon and the Lebanese state must have control of weapons,” Macron said.
“It is essential to ensure Lebanon’s sovereignty and the security of its people,” he stressed, highlighting the importance of diplomatic progress that has so far led to a partial Israeli pullback.
He also called for "accelerating" the implementation of the cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah.
Macron urged quicker action to consolidate peace and security, saying: “It is necessary to accelerate the recruitment and consolidation of the Lebanese Armed Forces, including international support in terms of equipment, training, and financial aid.”
He emphasized the role of key regional actors like Saudi Arabia and Qatar in aiding these efforts.
Macron reaffirmed France's long-standing commitment to Lebanon by addressing the nation alongside Lebanese President Joseph Auon.
“The spring has appeared, and you are this hope,” he said, commending Lebanon’s leadership for ending a prolonged political vacuum and working toward state-building.
He also recalled Lebanon’s resilience during crises, including the Beirut port explosion and recent conflicts.
The French president announced plans for an international conference in Paris to mobilize resources for Lebanon’s reconstruction, particularly in areas devastated by war.
He noted that France and the European Union would double their efforts, with the EU allocating €130 million for security and reconstruction initiatives.
Macron also emphasized the need to strengthen peace mechanisms, describing recent agreements as a” precious diplomatic success that has saved lives.”
Concluding his remarks, Macron pledged France’s unwavering support, saying: “We have stood by you during the darkest times, and we will remain at your side in rebuilding a sovereign, prosperous, and unified Lebanon.”
