BOGOTA (AA) - Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez has removed Major General Javier Marcano Tabata as commander of the unit responsible for protecting President Nicolas Maduro, replacing him with General Gustavo Gonzalez Lopez, amid a broader security reshuffle following Maduro’s capture by US forces.

According to reports in Venezuela’s national media, Rodriguez ordered Marcano Tabata’s dismissal over his failure to implement adequate security measures during the US military operation that led to Maduro’s capture.

Rodriguez appointed Gonzalez Lopez as both presidential guard commander and director general of military counterintelligence (DGCIM).

The Ministry of Communications said the appointments were part of an institutional strengthening and continuity effort aimed at ensuring the full enforcement of the country’s constitution.

Venezuelan media reported that the country’s Security Council is undergoing restructuring following Maduro’s detention, with changes taking place at the highest levels of command.

Analysts said the moves appear aimed at consolidating Rodriguez’s authority and tightening control over the security apparatus during a volatile transition period.

- General Lopez

Gonzalez Lopez previously served as head of Venezuela’s intelligence service (SEBIN) from 2019 to 2024 and also held the post of interior and justice minister.

His appointment has drawn attention domestically and internationally due to his record as a senior security official during the Maduro era.

International and human rights organizations have criticized Gonzalez Lopez over alleged abuses committed during his tenure at SEBIN, allegations that led to sanctions imposed by the US and the EU.

He is listed on the US Treasury Department’s sanctions register.

Rodriguez, who served as Maduro’s vice president, was sworn in as interim president before the National Assembly following Maduro’s detention by US authorities.
