ISTANBUL (AA) - Malay warrior saga film, “Sword of Islam,” or “Pendekar Awang,” premiered in Istanbul.
The story is inspired by a true story that portrays Malay people’s resistance against a British invasion of Malay lands during the 19th century.
The film shows a new perspective on the rich traditions, values and struggles of the nation.
One of the actors in the film, Ali Carib, who plays the main character’s brother, told Anadolu that he hoped the film would boost patriotism and “self-defense” against colonization.
The film opens with a clandestine message from a notable Malay scholar in Mecca during the Ottoman Empire, urging the people of the Malay region to resist the invasion.
Upon discovering the resistance, the British try to suppress the uprising.
Beyond offering entertainment, “Sword of Islam” seeks to instill patriotism, a love for one’s homeland and an understanding of the struggle against foreign occupation.
