ISTANBUL (AA) – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for a strengthened partnership with the Global South.

Addressing industry leaders on Wednesday in Lima, Peru, ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Anwar emphasized the importance of fostering stronger connections with the region.

Highlighting the untapped potential and growing opportunities in Latin America, Anwar stressed the need to refocus efforts to maximize these prospects.

“It’s crucial to shift course slightly and enhance collaboration with the Global South, tapping into the vast new potentials and opportunities,” Anwar said, according to Bernama News.

He noted that shifting global dynamics present a strong case for expanding Malaysia’s alliances, pointing out that while the US remains Malaysia's top investor, the country also maintains robust trade relations with China.

“And we are collaborating effectively in multiple areas. That is the way forward,” he added.

During his visit to Peru, Anwar was awarded the prestigious "El Sol del Peru" honor by President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra.

In addition, Anwar met with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and a delegation from the social media platform.

“We discussed the upcoming implementation of a new regulatory framework that will introduce licensing for social media services and internet messaging platforms, effective from Jan. 1 next year,” Anwar said.

“I look forward to continued dialogue and collaboration as we navigate this new regulatory landscape together, balancing the need for innovation with our shared commitment to the safety of the Rakyat (people) and the accountability of tech companies,” he added, as the two sides addressed concerns such as cyberbullying, scams, and defamation in Malaysia.
