ANKARA (AA) - Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday announced plans to embrace modern technologies, including digitalization, as a key strategy for enhancing public services and managing the island nation's limited resources.

Speaking at the “Summit of the Future Side Event: A Vision for an Intelligence-Driven Future for Maldives,” Muizzu emphasized that digitalization is at the heart of the country's national vision, aiming to boost economic prospects and improve the quality of life for Maldivians, according to a statement from his office.

“Digitalization is already being used to manage our nation’s scarce resources and enhance public service delivery,” Muizzu said. He highlighted the importance of initiatives like the Digital Maldives Program, which is equipping the country's youth with skills for the digital economy and ensuring equal opportunities for women, whom he described as the "backbone" of Maldivian society.

Muizzu also underscored the crucial role of digital technologies in addressing environmental challenges. He pointed to the implementation of early warning systems and smart technologies that are helping build a more sustainable and resilient future for the island nation, which is highly vulnerable to climate change.

Addressing the complexities of the digital age, Muizzu called for global cooperation to navigate the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements.

“The Maldives is a small nation, but our ambitions are vast,” he said, adding that the country's success will be measured not only by the technologies deployed but also by the improvements in people's lives.

Muizzu concluded by expressing confidence that the determination of the Maldivian people, along with support from the international community, would bring these ambitions to fruition.
