ANKARA (AA) - Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Tuesday recognized US President-elect Joe Biden's election victory.
Lopez Obrador's remarks came during a press conference where he read out a congratulatory letter he sent to Biden Monday night. The letter was later posted by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard on Twiter.
"Dear Mr. Biden: I am writing this text to congratulate you on the triumph that the people gave you and that the authorities of the United States of America have endorsed," it reads. "As you will remember, we met about 9 years ago and since then I have expressed to you personally and in a letter, the ideal of transforming Mexico and the purpose of banishing political corruption, the main cause of the painful inequality and violence that we suffer."
His remarks came a day after the US Electoral College affirmed Biden's electoral victory over outgoing President Donald Trump. Biden has won 306 delegates while Trump holds 232.
The president continued: "We are certain that with you in the Presidency it will be possible to continue applying the basic principles of foreign policy established in our Constitution; especially that of non-intervention and self-determination of the peoples."
Lopez Obrador also welcomed the position of the Democratic leader in favor of migrants, which he said, if continues, "will allow the continuation of the plan to promote the development and well-being of the communities in the southeast of Mexico and the countries of Central America."
"I hope that soon the opportunity to speak will present itself and in the meantime, I reiterate our congratulations and I wish you the best of luck for the good of his people and our nations. An affectionate greeting," he concluded.
