Mexican representative wants Ecuadorian president arrested, extradited to Mexico
Lower House lawmaker denounces Ecuadorian president for raid on embassy
By Jorge Antonio Rocha
MEXICO CITY(AA) - Fernandez Noroña, a lawmaker in the Mexican lower house, denounced Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on Tuesday for a raid on the Mexican Embassy and arrest of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas.
Noroña said Noboa violated international and Mexican laws.
"It is an unprecedented act in the history of Mexican diplomacy," Noroña told a group of reporters outside the Attorney General's Office. "We are requesting the arrest and extradition of President Noboa for the kidnapping of an asylum seeker, former Vice President Jorge Glas.
Since the embassy is governed under the Mexican Constitution, Noroña considers Glas, who lived as a political refugee since December in the embassy, as being kidnapped by the Ecuadorian government.
"I believe that the prosecutor's office is going to prove us right. We will see what the judge, who has to determine the arrest warrant, says, and therefore, when the time comes, the extradition will be executed," said Noroña.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador upheld Noroña's injunction at his morning news conference.
"He has every right to do so," he said. "Any complaint that is filed deserves to be dealt with, and the authorities should be the ones to resolve it."
After the military operation carried out April 5 by the Noboa government, where the Mexican Embassy was broken into and Glas arrested, Mexico broke diplomatic ties with Ecuador.
On Monday, Noboa said he did not regret the assault on the embassy and indicated he would invite Lopez Obrador to have a talk and eat ceviche and tacos.
Lopez Obrador reiterated his request to the UN to suspend Ecuador's membership until it issues a public apology.
He said the resolution should be “passed to the General Assembly of the United Nations, voted on, put to the consideration of all member countries, and if it is approved, applied, and that the United Nations Council does not have the right to veto because if this is not done, the UN will be left as a vase.”
