Mexico calls on world court to expel Ecuador from UN
Country also demands public apology from Ecuador for police raid on Mexican Embassy in Quito

MEXICO CITY (AA) - Mexico has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to expel Ecuador from the United Nations over a police raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito on April 5, the Foreign Ministry announced Thursday.
During a press conference, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said his government seeks to prevent future "authoritarian" acts such as the one Ecuador committed against Mexico's Embassy.
Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena said that under the complaint, Mexico is asking the UN to suspend Ecuador’s membership until its government issues a public apology for the raid, pays reparations for the damage caused and promises never to do it again.
In addition, Ecuador should be tried and found guilty of "violations of its international obligations."
Mexico's lawsuit also seeks to set a precedent and ensure a mechanism for the ICJ to determine the responsibility of a state in case of a violation "similar to the one committed by Ecuador" and to initiate the process of expulsion from the UN.
"Mexico's demands seek to strengthen the international legal framework for the peaceful settlement of disputes that should govern international coexistence. This demand is based on the conviction that the use of force is not the mechanism, it is peace and dialogue, and the use of force should be avoided," Barcena said during the press conference.
The international community has condemned the government of President Daniel Noboa after Ecuadorian armed forces forced their way into the Mexican Embassy to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who had been living there since December last year and is wanted on corruption charges. He was later transferred to a maximum security prison in the city of Guayaquil.
"The aim is to ensure that a despicable event such as the one suffered by Mexico and especially its diplomatic representation is not repeated in any country in the world and that international law is guaranteed," said Lopez Obrador.
