Mexico: Finance minister resigns with searing letter
Economic policy should be based on evidence, be free of extremism, says Carlos Urzua

ANKARA (AA) - Mexico's finance minister resigned on Tuesday with a letter made public on Twitter, highlighting his differences with the presidency of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
"There were many discrepancies in economic matters," Carlos Manuel Urzua Macias said in the letter, addressing Obrador.
Urzua underlined that public policy decisions were made "without sufficient support" under Obrador's left-wing regime.
"I am convinced that all economic policy should be enacted on the basis of evidence, taking care of different potential effects and that it is free from all extremism, be it from the right or left," he said.
Urzua added that he expressed these deficiencies during his time in office, with no effect on the administration.
"I found it unacceptable to impose officials who have no knowledge of the treasury. This was motivated by influential figures of the current government with a patent conflict of interest," he said.
He thanked President Lopez Obrador for the opportunity to serve Mexico.
Urzua has been finance minister since Obrador was elected in December 2018.
