Mexico will wait for election results before making statement on US presidency: President

'Let's see what happens tomorrow; who gets the majority if there is a result afterward,' says President Claudia Sheinbaum

MEXICO CITY (AA) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday she will wait for US authorities to report on the election results on Nov. 5 before making any statement regarding the course of the relations.

In her morning briefing, Sheinbaum promised cooperation and respect for the decisions the people of the US make during the elections.

"Let's see what happens tomorrow; who gets the majority if there is a result afterward. We will decide only after the entire electoral process in the United States is completed; we will not make any statements until the process is finished. That's how it should be, and that's what President Lopez Obrador did at the time. This is the same attitude the government of Mexico should take," said Sheinbaum.

During the 2020 general US elections, when Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden won over former President Donald Trump, then-Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador refrained from congratulating Biden and acknowledging his victory for over 30 days.

"We are waiting for the US electoral authorities to define the result of the election, once this happens, we will make a statement," said Lopez Obrador at the time.

Lopez Obrador's hesitance followed Trump's allegations of rigged elections. Lopez Obrador and Trump had held an amicable relationship during their shared time as world leaders.

Yet, Sheinbaum has promised cooperation with the victor of the US elections.

"There will be a good relationship," Sheinbaum said, adding that her government will work closely with the incoming administration.

During her morning briefing, Sheinbaum underscored the need to strengthen the commercial tides in North America and how much the US benefits from the international commercial treaty between the US, Canada, and Mexico, the USMCA.

"We are doing very important work, and we have also been working with business leaders. We want to strengthen this further to demonstrate the significance of the trade agreement for the United States. The USMCA benefits not only Mexico but also has significant advantages for the United States," she said.

Lastly, Sheinbaum noted there are pressing issues to discuss with the new president of the United States regarding regional security and development, such as migration, fentanyl, which she labeled as a "humanitarian crisis in the US," gun smuggling, and trade.
