Mexico's president welcomes new Palestinian ambassador

ISTANBUL (AA) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum this week welcomed Palestinian Ambassador Nadya Rasheed, who formally presented her credentials.

“Ambassador Nadya Rasheed had the honor of presenting H.E. Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum with the Letters of Credence accrediting her as Ambassador of the State of Palestine,” the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Mexico said on X on Wednesday.

“The Ambassador expressed the gratitude of the Palestinian people and government for Mexico's defense of human values,” added the embassy.

Last October, Sheinbaum said: "We condemn the aggression being experienced, and we also believe that the Palestinian state must be recognized in all its fullness, just as the state of Israel is recognized. This has been Mexico's position for many years, and it is the position we maintain.”

It marked the first time Mexico's new leader discussed Israel’s ongoing attacks on Palestine since being sworn in as president.

Nearly 50,000 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and over 112,000 injured in a brutal Israeli military onslaught in Gaza since October 2023.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
