Moldovan president meets Danish FM as Denmark opens embassy in Chisinau

Maia Sandu says opening of mission constitutes new stage in bilateral ties

ISTANBUL (AA) - Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Thursday met Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen as Denmark opened its embassy in the capital Chisinau.

The inauguration ceremony of the new mission took place at the Palace of the Republic.

“President Maia Sandu welcomed the opening of the Kingdom of Denmark's embassy in Chisinau, emphasizing that this fact constitutes a new stage in the relationship with Denmark,” her office said in a statement.

The new diplomatic mission will help intensify political dialogue, stimulate trade and people-to-people ties between Moldova and Denmark, it added.

Sandu expressed her gratitude for Danish support to Moldova in the process of modernization and accession to the European Union. The 27-member bloc announced starting accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine last month.

Earlier, Rasmussen met his Moldovan counterpart Nicu Popescu, and the two also took part in the embassy opening ceremony.
