  • Israel’s main labor union calls general strike to push for prisoner swap with Palestinians

Israel’s largest labor union has called a general strike on Monday to pressure the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach a prisoner swap deal with Palestinian factions.

The call came hours after the Israeli army said it had recovered the bodies of six hostages from the southern Gaza Strip.

“We are getting body bags instead of a deal. I have come to the conclusion that only our intervention might move those who need to be moved,” Histadrut Labor Federation chief Arnon Bar-David said Sunday evening.

  • German far right set to win state election for first time: Exit polls

Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was on track to win a state election for the first time, according to exit polls by public broadcaster ARD.

The anti-immigrant AfD was seen winning 30.5% of the vote in the eastern state of Thuringia, about 6% ahead of the center-right Christian Democrats (CDU).

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD) were predicted to win only 7% in one of their worst ever election results in this state. Their coalition partners – the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats – were below the 5% threshold necessary for entry into the state parliament.

  • Russia says it will change its nuclear doctrine due to West’s actions amid Ukraine war

Russia said it will change its nuclear doctrine due to the West’s actions regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told state news agency TASS that work on the country’s nuclear doctrine is at an “advanced stage,” further saying that there is a “clear directive to make adjustments.”

According to Ryabkov, these adjustments are conditioned by the study and analysis of Russia’s experience of conflict in recent years, including “everything related to the escalation course of our Western opponents.”
