RABAT, Morocco (AA) – Port workers in the northern Moroccan town Al-Hoceima went on strike on Sunday to protest the death of a fisherman in a security raid.
Mohsen Fikri, 31, was crushed to death in a garbage truck on Friday while trying to prevent security forces from confiscating the fish he was selling.
In a statement, the port workers said they would strike for one day in protest of the fisherman’s death.
The incident has triggered a storm of outrage across the North African country amid calls by rights groups for demonstrations on Sunday to protest the death.
Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane, for his part, has called for calm following the fisherman’s death and urged Moroccans not to heed any calls for protests.
