Morocco, Zambia sign 7 agreements covering vital sectors

RABAT, Morocco (AA) - Morocco and Zambia signed seven agreements Friday covering vital sectors, according to the Moroccan official news agency, MAP.

It came as both countries held their first Joint Commission for Cooperation, co-headed by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Zambian counterpart, Mulambo Haimbe, in Morocco's Laayoune in the disputed Western Sahara region.

MAP noted that Bourita and Haimbe signed the agreements "covering various areas of cooperation, including tourism, renewable energies, vocational training, justice, investment and higher education."

The top diplomats affirmed their determination to continue joint work to lay out a multi-dimensional partnership in line with the vision of both nations' leaders.

The Polisario Front seeks to establish the Western Sahara region as part of its territory, but Morocco said the region is part of its territory and offers a form of expanded self-rule.

The Front staged guerilla warfare against Morocco for the disputed region until the two sides signed a cease-fire agreement under UN mediation in 1991.

Negotiations on the status of the region have since failed to solve the conflict.
