MOSCOW (AA) – A Moscow court on Tuesday extended the arrest of US journalist Evan Gershkovich detained on espionage charges for another two months until Jan. 30, 2024.

US national Evan Gershkovish, who had worked for the Wall Street Journal newspaper, was arrested in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg in March by the Russian Federal Security Service for an attempt to acquire classified information.

In a statement on X, the US Embassy in Russia protested the arrest, expressing "deep concern" over another extension of the arrest and urging the Russian authorities to release Gershkovich.

The Wall Street Journal also decried the court's ruling, saying on its website: “Evan has now been unjustly imprisoned for nearly 250 days, and every day is a day too long.”
