WASHINGTON (AA) – Multiple people were injured Saturday by an active campus shooter in the US city of Providence, Rhode Island, as authorities urged residents to shelter in place.
“We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of multiple shooting victims, but we do not yet have information about their condition,” the public safety department of Brown University, where shots were initially fired, said in an online alert.
An initial alert released soon after 5 pm local time (2200GMT) said there was a shooter near the campus’ Barus & Holley Engineering building, instructing residents and students to “lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice.”
The Providence Police Department said in a statement on US social media company X that a heavy law enforcement and firefighter presence was near campus.
The university said in a subsequent message that a suspect was taken into custody, but later retracted the statement, underlining that the search for the gunman was ongoing and residents should avoid the area.
President Donald Trump released a statement via his social media company Truth Social, saying the FBI was also involved in the response.
