Nasdaq closes at new record-high; Dow finishes lower

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Nasdaq closed Tuesday at a record high, while the Dow Jones finished the first trading day of the week in negative territory.

The Dow was down 216 points, or 0.55%, to end the day at 38,852 after the blue-chip index fell 2.3% last week.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, rose just 1.32 points, or 0.02%, to end flat at 5,306.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, rose 99 points, or 0.59%, to close at 17,019. Last week, the tech-heavy index posted a 1.4% weekly increase.

The New York Stock Exchange was closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 4.53% to 12.92. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 1.56% to 4.543%.

The dollar index was flat at 104.60, while the euro was mostly unchanged at $1.0860 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in positive territory, with gold adding 0.4% to $2,360 per ounce and silver increasing 0.8% to $32.06.

Oil prices were also in the green, with global benchmark Brent crude rising 1.65% to $84.22 per barrel and US oil benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude soaring 3.2% to $80.19.
