NATO appoints former deputy secretary-general as new head of Ukraine representation

ISTANBUL (AA) — NATO on Wednesday announced the appointment of Patrick Turner as the new head of the its representation in Ukraine, seeking to enhance relations between the alliance and Kyiv.
Turner's was appointed by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, according to a written statement issued by the defensive bloc.
Highlighting Turner's past experience and expertise, Stoltenberg said: "As a committed public servant, he has a strong track record of delivering results. I am sure he will excel in this important role as NATO continues to step up its support to Ukraine."
Turner is expected to begin his duties in the capital Kyiv this September and will play a central role in relations between the alliance and Ukrainian officials, coordinate NATO efforts, and provide assessments and recommendations on the situation in Ukraine.
He previously served as NATO deputy secretary-general for operations and NATO deputy secretary-general for defense policy and planning.
At a session of the NATO-Ukraine Council, held as part of a summit in Washington, allied leaders agreed to strengthen the representation in Ukraine and to appoint a NATO senior representative to lead it.
