Nearly 20,000 deported to Mexico since Trump took office: Mexican president
Claudia Sheinbaum says most ousted immigrants are of Mexican origin

MEXICO CITY (AA) - President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that nearly 20,000 people have been deported to Mexico since US President Donald Trump took office on Jan. 20.
“As of today, since January 20, 2025, a total of 19,663 people have returned, including 15,600 Mexican nationals and 4,052 foreigners. Yesterday alone, 313 people were deported,” Sheinbaum said during her morning briefing.
Trump has made mass deportation a hallmark of his campaign platform and administration since his first term in 2016. However, more than a month into his renewed presidency, deportations remain below those of his Democratic predecessors.
The slower-than-expected pace has prompted a push for additional resources, with the Republican Party passing resolutions in both houses of Congress to secure larger budgets for Trump’s mass deportation plans.
By Feb. 21, the Trump administration had deported fewer than 38,000 immigrants—a significant drop from the monthly average of 57,000 reported under former President Joe Biden.
On the same day, the US Senate passed a bill proposing a substantial increase in the Department of Homeland Security budget, expanding spending by up to $175 billion. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives approved a budget resolution allocating an additional $90 billion to the Homeland Security Committee for border security efforts.
Former President Barack Obama still holds the record for the highest number of Mexican immigrants deported in a single month, with 70,000 removals during his tenure.
