LONDON (AA) - Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is expected to announce her resignation from the post, according to British media reports on Wednesday.
The Scottish National Party (SNP) leader is expected to announce that she will quit after eight years in the role, according to the BBC.
The news said that although it is not clear when exactly she will leave office, Sturgeon's resignation will mostly likely be announced at a news conference in the capital Edinburgh.
She has been in office since November 2014, after taking over from Alex Salmond.
Sturgeon is Scotland's first female first minister and also the first woman to lead any of the devolved UK administrations.
Scotland has had a devolved parliament since 1999.
Since the Brexit process was completed, Sturgeon has pushed for a new referendum on Scottish independence, following up on the 2014 poll – held two months before Sturgeon took office, and before the 2016 Brexit referendum – but the UK’s Conservative government has said it will not give permission.
